Myths and Facts about Mental Health

Myth:

People with mental health can’t work.

Fact:

You probably already work with someone with a mental health problem.

Myth:

People with mental health problems don’t want to work.

Fact:

The majority of the people with mental health problems want to work.

Myth:

People with mental health problems would not be able to maintain patient confidentiality if they worked in the health service.

Fact:

There is not evidence to suggest this.

Myth:

People with mental health problems would not be able to keep to the required time committment of the job.

Fact:

No evidence to suggest this and flexible working policies of LPT could help resolve any issues that did arise.

Myth:

People with mental health problems have a tendency to be violent.

Fact:

People with mental health problems are more likely to be attacked than to attack somebody.

Myth:

People who have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act can never work in the health service.

Fact:

There is no legislation to stop people who have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act from working in the health service.
